Happy Christmas Eve! It’s such a special day today. My family used to always open presents on Christmas Eve…so today I have a special present for all of you! The finale of Naughty and Nice!

I’ve really loved putting this story together for you all…I hope you like this ending as much as I do.

Jack excitedly pointed. “That’s our house, that’s our house!”

Reindeer hooves tapped on our snow-covered roof. The familiar sight of home made me smile, even if I was seeing our house from a completely new angle.

It was good to be home.

Santa slung his sack over his shoulder and extended a hand to each of us.

“Ready?”

We both took one of his hands. He jumped down the chimney, and it was a bit scary. But I trusted the magic of Santa Claus.

Within a few seconds, I was comforted by the familiar sights of home. It was just as I remembered. Our Christmas tree gave off a faint light.

“Ho, ho, ho!” Santa laughed. “Mr. and Mrs. White?”

My parents came running into the room. Dad rubbed his eyes and I noticed that Mom was wearing her Christmas pajamas.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

I could hear the exhaustion in her voice. She probably hadn’t been sleeping much since we went missing.

“Jack! Nick!” she cried when she saw us standing in the living room.

She immediately pulled us into a hug. I felt warm inside.

I had missed her.

“I had to borrow these two for a week,” Santa explained. “They’ve been a big help. They’re definitely on the Nice List this year.”

Nice list? Me?

My parents just stood there gaping.

“You took my kids for a week? And didn’t leave a note or anything?” Dad furiously raved.

Uh-oh.

Dad was about to get into an argument with Santa Claus.

“I meant no harm.” Santa’s voice boomed throughout the house. “I simply needed them to complete a few tasks for me.”

Mom shivered after hearing Santa Claus intimidate Dad. “Well, just ask next time.”

Santa nodded.

I supposed it wasn’t normal to have a conversation with Santa on Christmas Eve. It was normal for my parents to freak out. Yet after the past week, I didn’t find it abnormal at all.

Santa placed a couple of wrapped gifts under the tree.

“Now, get to sleep. You two can open them in the morning.”

“But…”

Wasn’t I on the Naughty List?

“Yes, even you Nick,” Santa replied.

I grinned. What gift could Santa have gotten me? Nothing could measure up to the amazing experience I’d had the past week.

Curiosity filled my mind.

How was I ever going to get to sleep?

After Santa left, Jack and I changed into our pajamas. It turned out that I did feel pretty sleepy. I curled up in my own bed and instantly fell asleep.

I woke up in a warm bed.

I was home.

Per tradition, Jack and I raced down the stairs on Christmas morning. We were excited to find plenty of gifts under the tree. I still was in awe that one of my gifts was from Santa Claus.

Mom and Dad were close behind us.

“Merry Christmas!”

I turned to find Mom and Dad with their arms around each other. Tears pricked at the edges of my mother’s eyes.

“Merry Christmas!” I cheered.

We gathered in the living room and opened presents. Jack and I both smiled at each other. For once, we didn’t care about the presents we received. All that mattered was that we were home. 

The love of my family was all I needed for Christmas.

I gasped when I opened my gift from Santa.

“It’s…it’s….”

Inside the package was a snowglobe. I shook it up. Inside, snowflakes glittered around a tiny Santa Claus.

Just like the North Pole…

It was my new favorite Christmas gift.

Once the presents were open, we curled up on our couch and watched Christmas movies. It felt just like normal.

This was just what I’d been missing.

The North Pole was fun, but it was nothing like home.

“I think it’s time for our Christmas Carol,” Dad decided, clicking off the TV.

We all stood around our Christmas tree. This was another of my favorite Christmas traditions.

“I was so worried about you boys!” Mom smiled. “I’m so grateful you’re back. I don’t know what I would’ve done without you!”

Jack and I shared her grin. “We’re glad to be back too.”

Dad hummed a note and we began to sing.

Our harmonizing voices faded as the song ended. I was so happy to be home, celebrating Christmas with my family.

As I stared at the Christmas tree, I saw a Santa ornament. I laughed. It didn’t look very much like the big guy. I knew at that moment that every Christmas after this would remind me of this Christmas.

I wouldn’t just remember the magic of the North Pole, but also the love that my brother had for me. I would treasure that most of all.
